Medical Mission 2006: highlights

Medical Mission 2006 (MM 2006) is UI’s first major project.
The following highlights of MM 2006 are only a summary of: sources of funds, results, future plans, and financial statements. This report excludes organizational phase, mission preparation, historical perspective and post-analysis, and commemorative work.
II. RESULTS
Clinical Srvices
The 6-day MM 2006 was carried out townwide at nine sites, namely: 1.
Sta. Maria Josefa Foundation Hospital, 2. Iriga City Coliseum, 3. St. Anthony Parish Church, 4. Iliyan Tribal Community, 5. Sta. Teresita Church, 6. Fatima Orphanage, 7. Dr. Jovy Catimbang Clinic, 8. City Health Clinic, and 9. Iriga Central School.
About 5,500 patients, pediatric and adult, were seen and treated. Cases were varied, such as: infections, pulmonary and URI ailments, UTIs, malnutrition, parasitism, TB, musculoskeletal problems, GI disorders, visual and dental problems, diabetes, gynecological (STDs), cerebra-vascular disorders, dermatoses, seizures, osteomyelitis, pneumonias, bronchial asthma, GI obstruction, leprosy and psychiatric disorders.
At the surgical site (Sta. Maria Josefa Foundation Hospital), over 250 patients were seen and evaluated, and 72 major surgical cases and 101 minor surgical cases performed. Major surgical cases included: TAHBSO (Total Abdominal Hysterectomy and Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy) (2); total hysterectomy (2); cheiloplasty (18); herniotomy (2); herniorrhaphy (9); thyroidectomy (22); lobectomy (3); varicocelectomy (1); pelvic laparotomy (1); colostomy (1); hydrocoelectomy (3); anaplasty (2); excision midaxillary (1); amputation fingers (1). Minor cases included circumcision, cyst and breast mass excisions.
At least 500 were seen for dental treatments, e.g., fillings and extractions.
Dental hygiene and education were conducted involving 459 school children and orphans.
Visual screening (as well as eyeglasses) was provided to 400 recipients.
Non-clinical Services
1. Distribution of relief goods (e.g., clothes, rice, sardines, sugar, iodized salt) to some very poor and malnourished children/families and indigenous population.
2. Distribution of seeds to 36 barangays and indigenous people to augment livelihood program of city government.
3. Provision of medications and medical supplies (e.g., gloves, sutures, dressings, antiseptics and surgical instruments) to Sta. Maria Josefa Foundation Hospital, Our Lady of Mediatrix Hospital, and Puericulture Center for use in indigent healthcare program.
4. Donation of assorted medications to National Commission on Indigenous People (NCIP), and NGOs like Gawad Kalinga and Sisters of the Institute of the Servants of Jesus of Charity.
5. Six-month supply of psychotropic medications and anticonvulsants to 10 patients for treatment of mental and seizure disorders.
6. Initiation of de-worming program involving 300 children.
7. Sponsorship of sports clinic, athletic competition and youth forum as part of measures to fight drug and alcohol abuse.
8. Continuing Medical and Nursing Education.
III. POST-MM 2006 PLAN
1. Post surgical (e.g., cheiloplasty and thyroidectomy) and medical (e.g., TB and leprosy cases) follow up.
2. Enhancement of de-worming program.
3. Implementation of program for primary-care education, proper nutrition, health habits and hygiene to combat malnutrition and year-round infections for younger population.
4. Construction of communal toilets to maintain sanitary and clean environment to prevent disease cycle and infectious ailments.
5. Tracking down through encouraging reporting of other communicable diseases such as dengue fever, hepatitis and STDs (sexually transmitted diseases).
6. Establishment of mental health program.
